Every day, individuals are sentenced to death and executed by the state as punishment for various crimes—some of which should not be criminalized. These range from drug-related offenses to acts of terrorism and murder.

In 2023, China continues to lead the world in executions of over 1000 cases. Excluding China, 89% of all reported executions are carried out in just two countries: Iran and Saudi Arabia.
